Modernize the data, not just the code
Application logic is often the easy part. Decades of data with inconsistent meaning, hidden dependencies, and undocumented integrations are where modernization efforts actually get hard. Treating data migration as a first-class workstream, not a final step, avoids painful surprises.
Success is invisible
The best modernization outcome is one users barely notice on day one and increasingly appreciate over the following months, as the system becomes faster to change, cheaper to run, and safer to operate.
